Our History

The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation was founded by philanthropists Jody Allen and the late Paul G. Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. Since its founding in 1988, the foundation has given over $1B in contributions around the globe. Known since July 2025 as Allen Family Philanthropies, the foundation’s portfolio invests in communities across the Pacific Northwest, nationally, and globally through its core program areas: arts & culture, youth and environment. Our grantmaking is committed to supporting thriving, healthy communities and advancing our collective wellbeing where creativity, future generations, and nature can flourish.

Paul G. Allen

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul G. Allen (d. 2018) worked to save endangered species, slow climate change, improve ocean health, share art, history and film, develop new technology, tackle epidemics, research how the human brain works, and build sustainable communities. In all his endeavors, he constantly asked "What if?" and pushed people to challenge conventional thinking, collaborate across disciplines and reimagine what is possible. Learn more at PaulAllen.com.
