The name change is just a rebranding that reflects the maturing of our organization and the continued philanthropic interests of the Allen Family. AFP’s grant portfolio continues nearly 40 years of philanthropic work on behalf of co-founders the late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen and his sister Jody Allen, board chair. 

Yes – Paul was an early signer of the Giving Pledge in 2010 and was named one of the world’s most generous philanthropists with lifetime giving of more than $2B, including a dedicated fund which has made more than $1B in total contributions since its founding in 1988. The name change is just a rebranding effort that reflects the maturing of our organization and the continued philanthropic interests of the Allen Family.  

Allen Family Philanthropies does not accept unsolicited requests for grant funding. When appropriate, the foundation will post information about new RFPs on the foundation website.  

The foundation’s focus areas remain the same: Arts & Culture, Youth, and Environment. A unifying element of the portfolio is its community-centeredness where solutions are built at the level where the need is greatest and the project teams are motivated and knowledgeable to secure measurable impact. No. Allen Family Philanthropies is a private family foundation, and separate and distinct from Paul Allen’s estate and other charitable organizations in the ecosystem, such as the Allen Institute, Ai2, MoPOP, etc. 

AFP holds assets of more than $1 billion (June 2025 is approx. $1.35B). Please see the foundation’s annual 990 tax return for further details about assets under management, available upon request or on the foundation website.  

On average, AFP grants between $50-$60 million per year across its program areas of arts & culture, youth development, environment, and bioscience.  

We fund work aligned to our program priorities across the Pacific Northwest, the U.S., and internationally.  

AFP’s headquarters are in Seattle, Washington.  

No - AFP does not solicit or accept contributions. Individuals and organizations interested in making contributions should consider directly supporting nonprofits in their community or around the world that match your philanthropic interests. Consult your local community foundation or financial advisor.  

No, AFP does not receive government funding.  

The foundation provides a range of support in alignment with our mission and focus areas. Funding is considered case by case based on our programmatic priorities.

Reporting Misconduct

Our foundation is committed to ensuring that its operations are conducted in accordance with the highest standards of ethics and integrity and in compliance with laws. Comprehensive information, including the procedures for reporting misconduct related to the foundation’s activities, is available in the foundation’s Whistleblower Policy.

Code of Conduct

Our foundation has high ethical standards governing its work and expects those same standards from its grantees, funding partners, vendors and contractors based on our foundation’s Code of Conduct.

Reporting Scams

Our foundation is aware that there have been fraudulent correspondence informing recipients that they have been awarded money from our foundation and asking for confirmation of an email address or other personal information. Our foundation does not conduct any grantee outreach or correspondence via unsolicited emails or social messaging and will never request administrative fees, host lotteries of any kind, request donations or offer investment opportunities, nor request any private information such as banking details. Such messages should be reported as fraudulent to the recipient’s network provider or social media platform. Recipients may also inform our foundation at info@allenphilanthropies.org.
