Washington State Arts and Culture Sector Report
Arts and culture occupy a place alongside other essential sectors such as parks and recreation, libraries, schools, and civic institutions that make a place worth living in. When all these sectors flourish, communities are more cohesive, more resilient, and more equitable. Funding the arts is vital to community well-being. We need to continue to study the impact philanthropy and other funding mechanisms has in this sector.
To better understand the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, we partnered with SMU DataArts to analyze three years of data from organizations funded through the Community Accelerator Grant program, which is funded by Allen Family Philanthropies and administered by ArtsFund. The resulting Washington State Arts & Culture Sector Analysis examines funding access, financial health, organizational capacity, and community impact across Washington's arts ecosystem through a qualitative and quantitative lens.
The report reveals both progress and ongoing challenges for both funders and non-profit arts and culture organizations. It tells us how grant design shapes who actually receives resources, and how small organizations, which are often invisible in broader data sets, are faring across the state. For funders, policymakers, and arts leaders, the report offers a data-informed look at the current state of Washington's arts and culture sector and the conditions needed for it to thrive.
